Australia's Postgraduate Scholarship Pay You More
Australia's Postgraduate Scholarship Pay You More
(1)The average entry requirement in Australian universities is not lower than the UK. Every year or so, the university requirement in Australia changes depending on the country needs. For instance, if they think they need more science graduates, then they encourage people to do science and sometimes have to slightly lower the entry requirement. Once you get into the university, again depending on which one and if you enter one of the eight university group, the quality of education is quite high. You have to be independent and be very innovative about your studies etc. They expect you go out with skills of that of Harvard's student. Of course, not everyone will be able to grasp that. I agree with the fact that "A-levels are not the most accurate indicator of one's true ability" because your ability doesn't just stop there at year 12. You learn more and improve more everyday.
(2)One writer mentioned that "UK undergraduate students automatically earn their honours in a 3-year program, even with average grades. Meanwhile, an Australian undergrad can do brilliantly and get awesome grades and still graduate with a degree WITHOUT honours". This is true. Now, from here, one would have to think whether they want to proceed to do research or not. If the person wants to do research, then you HAVE to do honours then you can skip masters and do your PhD (if you get 2:1 or higher). However, if you get 2:2 or lower, you have to do Masters BY research. The scholarship does not recognised the ‘skipping' stage even if you score really good grades.
(3)Now, you can still do masters if you don't have honours. You can do masters by coursework which is generally 1 - 1.5 years. However, if you wish to do research or PhD, you need to do some sort of research skill course eg. masters by research, Graduate diploma etc. The thing is in UK, 3 years with honours does not involve extensive research training as in Australia (which is the honours year).
(4)The Education scholarship system in Brunei is based on UK-education system, where if one wants to do PhD, they have to undergo a research training course (in UK - Mphil). The scholarship system does not recognise that in Australia, honours = research training course because in the UK, honours = good grades in undergraduate. Now, this transition is not recognized by the scholarship of Brunei. In conclusion, fact is: with the current scholarship criteria, a UK undergrad student can scrape through their degree and still be eligible for a masters scholarship so does Australia undergrad student!
My advised to you is if you cannot get Brunei's scholarship, get Australia's postgraduate scholarship. They pay you more (>$25,000 Lpa) than Bruneian scholarship. Good luck!
